Not Justified
by Anurup Arora

I as any other service class delhite, every morning jostle up daily traffic to reach my office. On every red light stoppage, we encounter hoards of destitute children and adults either amputated or dressed in various attire & cosmetic set up asking for alms.  Is this celebration of God or just another means of commercializing God? Poverty in India .....

Smoking Kills
Sanchi chhabra
‘A Cigarette is the only consumer product which when used as directed kills its consumer’.
People find it scrumptious, advertisements make it seem divine and marvelous, and actors and people we look up to don’t think its bad.
Moreover our peers or at times our own family members persuade us to have one. Health experts on the other hand tell us its dangerous. Ex-smokers are relieved to have kicked the habit and many smokers wish they'd never started. So, what should you do?

Is Thin Really in?
by ILA
Rashi isn't exactly fat. But she thinks she is. Moreover her parents keep nagging her that she is growing obese day by day. Her friends too agree that she is slightly overweight. All this keeps her tense and worried throughout the day. She has become over-conscious of herself in public places and refuses to buidge out of her room as much as is possible.
This is not the story of Rashi alone, but many girls across the country are leading a life of depression, simply because they are bulkier than what the 'accepted' weight for girls is. The American culture of 'Thin Is In' has already embarked in India and is fast gaining momentum. Gone are the days when a little obese women with voluptuous bodies were considered beautiful and healthy. Today only thin women can stake claim for acknowledged beauty in the larger part of our society. To add to this, the latest fad gripping the country is that of 'size zero', which according to experts, constitutes a 32 inches bust size, 23 inches waist and 32 inches hips. Most of the health experts consider size zero as a detrimental state for the body, and which clearly emphasises the lack of nutrition in the body.

Arms little longer

by Ankita Shree
It is easy to deny and to ignore. It is easy to assume that we have all the answers, easier still to believe we don’t need any answers. But the most difficult part is to speak out, and worse still, to listen…
Because it’s only when we listen that we realize the harmony of our jubilant lives is not all that perfect after all. That there are voices beyond and beneath ours. Unheard and ignored.
Some of us choose not to listen. Some of us just raise the volume of our own stereos.
But not all of us are that conveniently fortunate.
There are some whom those voices haunt, and they listen. Because they realize there is a reality beyond Gucci and Versace. They realize the disfigured and distorted picture of democracy blatantly painted on our walls. They realize the foundation of deep depravity that the edifice of our greatness as a nation is built upon. And most importantly, they realize that they can not afford to sit back and “let it be”…coz it’s their story.  It’s our story. So it’s for us to write it. It’s for us to move, and shake, and create. Create a new foundation which is big enough to accommodate those who have been forced into the oblivion of non-existence. Lend our voices to those who have long been silenced.
Let’s have arms a little longer. Let’s reach out.

UNITED WE FALL

by Tarang Girdher
The biggest democracy of the world today stands solemn facing a question even bigger than its own existence and unfortunately it has no answer.

We say that we are a free country, but if we ask ourselves the question do we really have an answer? I believe no!

Is it just the freedom to move about or shop that our freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for, or was it the freedom of thought and its expression that they wanted. Although the long struggle they managed the freedom of expression but sadly enough we still have failed miserably in achieving the freedom of thought.

Although the longest and the most elaborate constitution of the world declares India as a secular state and we believe it just for the sake of it.

What escapes the eye is hard to realise but the truth stands solid right in its place. The religion based reservation in some of the most prestigious colleges of our nation stands as a bitter example which our senses fail to realise.

I know I’m gonna be showered with a lot of rant mails after this article goes public but the fact remains that how liberal we might sound, how rational we think we are we are still thinking what the british wanted us to.

CRICKET LOOMS-3
CRICKET LOOMS-3 by Ila

You couldn’t really entertain, while also remaining unscathed by its corrupting influence. Money compliments entertainment, & if you have hoards of it, the boundaries of morality begin to blur. So if a person slapped his once-adored friend, the world had every right to pounce at the bait of entertainment thrown at them.

Cricket Looms

By Ila
Hey, Dravid’s team lost again. He’s an old fellow now. I think, he’d better retire”,said Anupam, contemplating if he still had time left to have a sound meal in McDonald’s & then head back home to catch up with the next match.
Sipping his Pepsi, he felt a cold wave run down his spine, as he imagined himself playing amongst those elite cricketers. Someday, he would become one of those bright cricket stars, he thought. After all, he had the gumption to dream & had
the potential to carve a niche for himself in the alluring world of cricket.
His friend, Sahil interrupted abruptly his train of thoughts,”Dude, do you know Chelsea are fast catching up with Manchester United? I’m sure they’ll manage to steal the thunder from under the noses of Ronaldo & his boys.”
“Wait! What are you talking about?”, quipped Anupam, feeling lost in a conversation heading to a vague point.
“Well, don’t tell me that you are totally ignorant about the English Premier League”, said Sahil, slightly taken aback..
“For that matter, Indian Premier League is what I’m vividly aware of. And why not?
Its been raging over our heads from the past few weeks. Its all over the newspapers, & the T.V., & this justifies our curiosity for every shot & miss happening in & around IPL”, replied a defiant Anupam, though a wee bit concerned about his deteriorating knowledge about other sports. “Cricket does take a toll on your interests”, mused he. “But I, in no way, would like to revert it.”
“Cricket is what I love, like most Indians, & I don’t care a hoot for what’s going on in other sports. In any case, cricket is what I’ll eventually foray into”, he said, though checking himself if he had been imprudent in asserting his opinions
so boldly..
For a moment, Sahil realized that he was banging his head against a carefully plastered wall. His friend’s ideas had been driven to a fixity, & one couldn’t really blame him, for in a country like India, sports was certainly synonymous to
cricket.

Cricket looms-2
BY ILA
Gazing at the bustling crowd in the Metro station, Sahil was wondering why cricket was exalted to obsession among the Indian populace. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh-you name them; you could go on & on about
cricketers who were remorselessly hailed as heroes. BCCI is the wealthiest cricket board in the world, & its patronized cricketers the wealthiest sportsmen in India.
Although, sports stalwarts like Sania Mirza(tennis), Narain Kartikeyan(carracing), Baichung Bhutia(football), Vishwanathan Anand(chess), are playing a lone hand in their endeavours to battle for the equally deserved dignity & popularityof their respective sports. Why do they blame our hockey players solely, if they are unable to qualify for the World Cup, when there’s work to be done at the grassroot levels?, thought Sahil.
Condemning the biased attitude of the authorities & ignorance of the masses, Sahil was drowned in his own thoughts when Anupam called from behind, “Dude, we’re heading the wrong way.”
To this, Sahil tactfully replied,”Now, that’s what I’ve been trying to say. We’ve set our destination right but we’re wandering on the wrong platforms.”
“Ah…All right! Only if I could discern that. Anyways, I just heard on radio that Bhajji is going to plead to BCCI for a final chance.”
“Damn it!” So, Sahil was back in this world. “Wayne Rooney is finally going to the altar with his childhood sweetheart Coleen next month. Now, how’s that?”, retorted a seemingly bugged Sahil.
Anupam laughed, & said, ”I was just pondering over Delhi Daredevils’ chances of winning the trophy…& I think they are fantabulous.”
“And I was pondering over India’s chances of churning out great, international football players like Ronaldo, Lampard, Gerrard”,answered Sahil.
“Shoaib is finally making a smashing entry into Dada’s team. Man, he’s one such guy who can beat the hell out of his adversaries, be it through his bowling attack, or sometimes through his bat, even if that required hitting his own team
mates.”, said Anupam jubilantly.
Sahil quipped,”So, cricket is more of entertainment, & not exactly a ‘gentleman’s game’. Right?” “But it sells, nevertheless.”
