The most prominent element of the Heritage of a nation is its culture. The culture of a nation finds expression in two ways: the visible elements are dresses worn by the people, the food they eat, music, dance and architecture. The invisible elements are the way people think, the values they hold dear and their ideas and beliefs.

Nehru Memorial Museum is organizing eight lectures on various aspects of our cultural heritage.

Liberty and Society seminar,
-Prashant NARANG

Prabodh in association with Liberal Youth Forum-India organized a three-day seminarfor Youth to spark a debate on Public policy. The event was sponsored by FriedrichNaumann Stiftung- Fur Die Freiheit.
The seminar was divided into three parts –
Personal freedom
Economic freedom
Good governance, Rule of law and Public policy
First day, the session called as ‘Right and wrong’ was based on the notions of
morality and legality. The objective was to convey that law may be based on moralitybut its purpose is not to enforce morality. The reason is morality is subjective andmay differ from individual to individual. The mind jog given was of a man who doesnot save a drowning person and is busy reading a newspaper. It is certainly immoral but not illegal. The participants were divided into three groups and assigned to check the laws in our society whether those enforce morality and hence to check the personal freedom. The groups chose right to free expression, right to self-abuse and sexual freedom and discussed various acts and behaviors that are controversial and categorized them degree-wise. For example, tattooing is lesser self-abuse; higher degree is of smoking, then alcoholism, drug addiction and so on. Our laws may permit smoking and alcohol but not drugs and certainly  they do not grant Right to die.

Arms little longer

by Ankita Shree
It is easy to deny and to ignore. It is easy to assume that we have all the answers, easier still to believe we don’t need any answers. But the most difficult part is to speak out, and worse still, to listen…
Because it’s only when we listen that we realize the harmony of our jubilant lives is not all that perfect after all. That there are voices beyond and beneath ours. Unheard and ignored.
Some of us choose not to listen. Some of us just raise the volume of our own stereos.
But not all of us are that conveniently fortunate.
There are some whom those voices haunt, and they listen. Because they realize there is a reality beyond Gucci and Versace. They realize the disfigured and distorted picture of democracy blatantly painted on our walls. They realize the foundation of deep depravity that the edifice of our greatness as a nation is built upon. And most importantly, they realize that they can not afford to sit back and “let it be”…coz it’s their story.  It’s our story. So it’s for us to write it. It’s for us to move, and shake, and create. Create a new foundation which is big enough to accommodate those who have been forced into the oblivion of non-existence. Lend our voices to those who have long been silenced.
Let’s have arms a little longer. Let’s reach out.

MJ In India!

By P. Venkatesh
MJ is neither Bad nor Dangerous. He certainly loves a good Thriller, and is here to create History. Sure, there will be Blood, although not on the Dance Floor.

MJ? No, not Michael Jackson. MJ bole toh Mohit Juneja! Just one of those regular hardcore Software Geeks making dollars by the dozen in the Land of Milk n' Honey. However, there sure is something extra-ordinary about this ordinary NRI.

2001. Flashback! A short computer science student of Delhi University with floppy hair and Harry Potterish glasses stands tall and scolds his classmates, "Please speak in English. If we continue like this, we won't stand much chance in the professional world". As usual, his suggestions drown in the laughter of his classmates poking fun at his new-found fascination for the Anglo-tongue. After all, which normal person would stuff both their pockets with carefully self-designed Flash cards – just to improve one's Vocabulary!

UNITED WE FALL

by Tarang Girdher
The biggest democracy of the world today stands solemn facing a question even bigger than its own existence and unfortunately it has no answer.

We say that we are a free country, but if we ask ourselves the question do we really have an answer? I believe no!

Is it just the freedom to move about or shop that our freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for, or was it the freedom of thought and its expression that they wanted. Although the long struggle they managed the freedom of expression but sadly enough we still have failed miserably in achieving the freedom of thought.

Although the longest and the most elaborate constitution of the world declares India as a secular state and we believe it just for the sake of it.

What escapes the eye is hard to realise but the truth stands solid right in its place. The religion based reservation in some of the most prestigious colleges of our nation stands as a bitter example which our senses fail to realise.

I know I’m gonna be showered with a lot of rant mails after this article goes public but the fact remains that how liberal we might sound, how rational we think we are we are still thinking what the british wanted us to.
