“POLITICS IS NOT FOR ME”
- By Cijo .P. Mathew
Sometimes I ask myself as to what is going to be our next generation of politicians gonna be like. Our generation has seen politicians who are corrupt and misuse their powers to benefit themselves. Here , I am not saying that the entire political community is corrupt , there are honest leaders who work with integrity towards the cause of nation building . When we think of politics today, what also comes to mind is the dirty game of communal politics played by some handful politicians and the riots in the name of rAeligion to create a rift among countrymen to either come to power or maintain power? People who have good intentions and want to really work for the society are often not allowed to, by these corrupt politicians. Seeing all this happen, today our young generation don’t want to enter this field, many would say “I don’t want to enter into this mess” and some others would simply say that “politics is not for me”.
Well if no one would want to do this job we should just accept the existing system and we should not complain about it. Never say that these politicians are corrupt and useless, because you are the one who made them so. In our country there are people who don’t even use their voting power and then complain and cry that this country is not run well. They have no right to say so, because they are not contributing in any way to get anything back. The minimum or the least they can do is vote and they run away from this small responsibility also. We need people, with grit and determination, to stand up against what is wrong. As youngsters, we should realise our responsibilities. I am not saying that each one of us should go and join politics. No, but what we can do is atleast be concerned for our nation and its people. We should voice our views and may be even shout it out loud to make people hear us, if we think we are right. There’s no point in murmuring among ourselves and hiding behind each other and then commenting that India is going nowhere .if India is going nowhere then so are we because India is what gives us our identity .
I am presently the secretary of the south campus students union , Delhi university .This post was not something i desired or wanted . It was comletely accidental that i got elected but once I got into the union , I realised that it was a huge responsibility .my friends used to joke with me that i had power in my hands now , but i knew that with power comes responsibility and this power could be used with good intentions too . To be very frank , I never wanted to change the entire system or bring about a revolution through my work but I knew that somewhere I could make a difference . I knew that I am answerable to many people, for the work I do .and above all, I am answerable to god. Being a staunch and devout catholic I would never do something that would hurt another person or what I would call as unethical . To be honest , there have been instances where I was tempted by people around , to do wrong, but being in the post for about a year now , I can put my hand to my heart and say that I have always stood firm to what i thought was right . And for this I have got my share of criticism and opposition from my colleagues . But I have this satisfaction that I could differentiate between what was right and what was wrong and I voiced my views against what was wrong .I know that I can’t change this society or the system all on my own but I also know that if like-minded people work together for a common cause , they surely can make a difference .
We , the youth of this great nation , are the ones who have to bring about a change through the way we think . We have the power of education in our hands, which can overturn a system. We have to come to terms with reality and realise that our role in nation bulding is immense. It could be in any field but what matters is the thoughts that we carry and the way in which we achieve our goals. Youth have brought about change and have initiated revolutions, the perfect example being the may 4th revolution in china. We can do the same, given that we realise our responsibilities as loyal citizens of this great nation. I am not asking each and every one of you to hold banners and stage a protest on the streets but all I want to see is people standing up against the wrongs .we can’t change the entire nation in a day but then we have to start somewhere .Today’s youth is knowledgeable enough to understand the problems in our country. Through our education and the will to do good we can atleast make a stand and make our views heard. We have to unite as just students and above all as Indians who care for their motherland. This is the age in a person’s life when he see’s a change in himself and has the capability to change thing’s around him. The youth of this country has to awaken and support its stumbling nation. We can’t turn away from our responsibilities towards our motherland because this is the time she needs us . So stop complaining about the fact that you were born in India and think of the solutions to make it a better place or even the best place. What we need today is young leaders who are well educated and are dedicated to the cause of nation building.
In the end I would just ask youngsters to face reality and meet the challenges that this society faces rather than saying “politics is not for me”.
