Is Thin Really in?
| Is Thin Really in? |

by ILA Rashi isn't exactly fat. But she thinks she is. Moreover her parents keep nagging her that she is growing obese day by day. Her friends too agree that she is slightly overweight. All this keeps her tense and worried throughout the day. She has become over-conscious of herself in public places and refuses to buidge out of her room as much as is possible. This is not the story of Rashi alone, but many girls across the country are leading a life of depression, simply because they are bulkier than what the 'accepted' weight for girls is. The American culture of 'Thin Is In' has already embarked in India and is fast gaining momentum. Gone are the days when a little obese women with voluptuous bodies were considered beautiful and healthy. Today only thin women can stake claim for acknowledged beauty in the larger part of our society. To add to this, the latest fad gripping the country is that of 'size zero', which according to experts, constitutes a 32 inches bust size, 23 inches waist and 32 inches hips. Most of the health experts consider size zero as a detrimental state for the body, and which clearly emphasises the lack of nutrition in the body. This trend is further forged by skinny models walking the ramps and other film celebrities donning miniscule body size. All this is bound to become a rage amongst the youngsters, who then resort to unhealthy tactics to lose weight and attain almost massless bodies. Some even tend to become annorexic. In fact, rumours have it that many women celebrities in Bollywod & Hollywood are annorexic, and this is where they take a cue from. A person becomes annorexic when he eats less than his body requirement. Such a person observes his body image as much fatter than it actually is. In other words, he seems to be obsessed with his body size & may notice the slightest gain of bulk in the most obscure places of his body. He has a tendency to assume that whatever he eats adds to his body weight, and therefore he resorts to minimum eating. Such people need medical help and should consult a psychologist immediately. So, as girls like Rashi are on the verge of depression and becoming annorexic, we,as a society, need to rethink and redefine our standards of beauty(but I wonder if they really need to be defined). BMI(Body Mass Index) is what one needs to keep in mind while judging one' own and others' sizes.
